Beyond the render silo - Semantically annotating 3D data within an integrated knowledge graph and 3D-rendering toolchain Abstract uri icon

abstract

  • As a result of mass-digitisation efforts, cultural heritage and research institutions have had to adapt their practices to account for shifts in what cultural stewardship and the study of cultural memory entails. Representations of cultural assets in the form of 3D models within disciplines such as architecture, art, archaeology, and 3D reconstruction are particularly heterogeneous in formats and structure, ergo standardized access and visualisation tools face new challenges. Furthermore, cultural memory preservation requires the active participation of diverse audiences who can easily access, search and enrich datasets through annotations and critical interpretations. This poster presents the development of a suite of tools as part of the NFDI4Culture project focusing on such enrichment. The toolchain facilitates the annotation of 3D data within a knowledge graph (Wikibase) and a sophisticated rendering environment (Kompakkt), so that 3D objects' geometry, attendant metadata and annotations are accessible and searchable as part of the semantic web.
